Fareshare makes good progress on site

Monday, August 18th, 2008

FareShare is the national charity working to relieve food poverty by  providing quality food and other support services to organisations working with disadvantaged people in the community.

• Over 4 million people in the UK cannot afford a healthy diet.

• An estimated 1/3 of food grown for human consumption is thrown away.

• In 2007 2,000 tonnes of quality fit-for-purpose food were saved from landfill.

• 3.3 million healthy, nutritious meals were made with food from FareShare,

Feeding 12, 000 people in over 420 community projects.

A Training centre is being set up to train volunteers in  food preparation and fork lift truck driving.

Many volunteers may have  previously been service users of the charities FareShare supports. The Employability Programme offers recognised vocational qualifications (GNVQ/BTEC), enabling participants to gain confidence, skills and work experience in a supporting environment.

AFH UK have provided a pro bono multidicsiplinary design service,  with Architecture, Structures and M+E input.  The project is on site and is due to be completed by the end of september. Please refer to Project pages for plans etc.

London Marathon 2009 – Run for AfH UK

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

FLORA LONDON MARATHON – 26th April 2009
Your chance to run for AfH UK in one of the the world’s greatest races – and the only sporting event where you get to participate in the same field as the elite. Running across that finishing line will be one of the best experiences you will have in 2009 – so what’s stopping you?

Why run for AfH UK?

AfH UK believe in building a better world. We provide professional architectural and engineering assistance to groups in need. Our work benefits the vulnerable sector of society by providing assistance in building – for example – a food distribution centre in Bermondsey, a school in Ethiopia, or a home at Christmas for the homeless. By running for us, you will be running for a better built environment for all.

We have one silver bond place to give to a runner who agrees to raise a minimum of £1,500. We’ll support you every step of the way – two of our Trustees have run three marathons between them and are there to help you with training, nerves and the big day.

We will allocate the place once the ballot results are out, in December. Please register your interest in running for us with Keren Querfurth at keren.afh.uk@mac.com
