Sandlanders Football Co-op
Sandlanders is a charity which works with supporter-owned African football clubs to provide training and facilities. AfH Uk was commissioned to design a new football pitch and community centre for the Keta Sandlanders, a Ghanian football club, as well as guidance on sustainable farming techniques.
The design comprises an inner shaded area surrounded by an outer wall topped by a wing-shaped roof to protect against intense sunlight and allow prevailing winds to enhance airflow. A latticework wall also acts to improve air circulation and at night offers a beacon of light.
The centre will be constructed from earth bags by local contractors and community members. A model farm will help to reinvigorate shallot and coconut growing, which traditionally provided financial stability to the community. Composting latrines will help improve sanitation, hygiene and sustainable living.
